DescriptionThis house on 37th Street was built in 1909 and is still standing. It was the home of Gardner Cowles and his wife Florence. Mr. Cowles was a banker, publisher and politician. He served two terms as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. In 1903 Mr. Cowles purchased the Register and Leader Company, starting his family's publishing and media empire. Drake University conferred upon Mr. Cowles the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1937 the Gardner Cowles Foundation donated funds for Cowles Library, Drake's main library. Mr. Cowles passed away in 1946.
